Age of Empires Mobile – Star System Explanatory Guide

Star System Explained

By kaity

At the moment you need to get 10 medals of a hero to unlock them, once you unlock a hero you can level them up add customizable skills, upgrade all the skills, put equipment, and put rings, you are not locked out of anything when you unlock the hero.

But there is what is known as the “star system” by the players or “ranks” officially that utilizes the additional hero medals after unlocking them.

This is for example what the hero Josephine Stars look like.

As you can see there are 5 stars under the advance header, but what you may notice in this image is that the stars are split into 5 parts each.

If we go down we can “effect” the header and under it Josephine’s Might and +1 in green on the right.

Each “part” of a star increases this effect, this will be clearer in the next images.

Now you can see the parts of the first star more clearly, 4 parts in the left image, and 2 parts in the right image.

As said before each part of a star will increase what is under the “effect” header, what is here is always a hero stat, or to be more specific, their favorite hero stat (the stat that the hero skills scale off).

If we go down we will see “Unlock At Rank I’ this is a skill boost to the signature skill Josephine already has, this is unlocked when you complete the 5 stars and get the full star.

The last part is “requirement” which is the hero medals required for each “part” of the star.

This may be confusing so lemme rephrase:

  • When you have additional medals you can use them to get a “part” of a star.
  • When you get a “part” of the star you get more hero stat for each part.
  • You can do this 4 times for each star (same stat increase and same hero medals required).
  • On the fifth time the hero stat increase doubles and the medals required are more, while also boosting a skill.

Note: the skill boosted is usually a signature skill, but it could be the commander’s skill.

Note: the first, the third, and the fifth stars boost a skill (commander skill or signature skill), while:

  • The second star (of a legendary hero) provides a 2.5% damage increase to the whole team.
  • The fourth star (of a legendary hero) provides a 2.5% damage reduction to the whole team.

Typically you want to get a full star before you stop investing in a hero, and you don’t want to stop on the second or fourth star ( for example stopping on a 3rd star can be a sweet spot).

The medals required for each star are the following:

  • 1st star= 20 medals
  • 2nd star= 50 medals
  • 3rd star 100 medals
  • 4th star 150 medals
  • 5th star 270 medals

590 medals for all stars and 10 stars for unlock= 600 medals total to max a hero.

Don’t matter that much because the stars boost the skills In an insignificant way.

Which is not completely a wrong statement.

But they underestimate what the stat increase does.

Let’s expand on this.

In Josephine Stars you can now upgrade a “part” In Josephine, the first star gives 1 might, that is for the first 4 parts, and the fifth part gives double the buff 2 might.

Which means 6 might points.

You get more stats for a part the more stars you get (can be seen in above images 1 1 1.5 2 2).

To cut it short Josephine is expected to get 45 might points when she has 5 stars.

Might is a stat that Josephine on most of her skills, her damage, and her healing scales off it, also might increase the might attack of the team, increasing the whole team might damage.

The 45 might points are also amplified by the troop and specialty matching.

For example, if Josephine is put with King Derrick and Hammurabi (matching 3 swordsmen and 3 warrior specialty).

Her stats including the 45 might points will be multiplied by 1.6.

Using base value I tried to find the value of the stars of every hero in the game.

But I want to split the legendary heroes into two categories:

  • First category: are the tavern heroes, the hero rally heroes, and the daily bundles and battle pass heroes (including Justinian).
    • These heroes’ stars give stats similar to the example used above.
  • Second category: are the wheel heroes, Vip heroes (Miyamoto and Constantine), Leonidas and Mulan.

These heroes get more stats from the stars, these heroes are expected to have 90 might at 5 stars for example.

It’s assumed that the heroes are at 100% of their value at 5 stars, the calculations are done once as a secondary and another as a commander.

Of course base values as always are not necessarily 100% accurate.

For most heroes the percentages for the secondary and commander are usually close to each other, the exception is here because Richard 5th star buffs his commander skill.

Most of the Tavern and Hero rally heroes seem to set between 60-80% at stars compared to 5 stars while the wheel heroes seem to set between 50-70%, of course, exceptions are everywhere.

You may notice some heroes get high value from the 5th star even though the skill boost is not as good as it seems. This is because of the stat increase I mentioned above, of course, you need to look at how expensive it is to get the 5th star even if it’s considered the best increase in most of the heroes.
