Fundamentally Important Commandments of Baldur’s Gate
- Every class can solo every game on every difficulty. “Best” doesn’t really exist in a single player game – have fun with your characters!
- Ranged is king of BG1. Spells are king of BG2.
- If you are a new player looking for a class, consider Fighter/X multi-classes, Berserkers, or Archers.
- Dual classes are not new player friendly. Also, only humans can dual class. Seriously. Only humans.
Newbie spell priority list by spell level:
- Blind, Sleep.
- Web, Invisibility.
- Haste, Fireball, Melf’s Minute Meteors.
- Emotion: Hopelessness, Stoneskin, Greater Malison.
- Cloudkill, Animate Dead, Breach.
- Dual Wielding does more damage than 2-handed weapons. In general: +1 attack per round > +1 thac0 > +1 damage.
- The lower your Thac0 and the lower your AC (armor class) the better.
- Generally, +1 Thac0 = +5% chance to hit — and +1 AC = +5% chance to dodge.
- The game interchangeably uses +1 Thac0 or -1 Thac0 to refer to bonuses or penalties (and the same goes for AC). Yes, it’s confusing. Just remember: the lower, the better.
There’s no rush. Go everywhere. Try everything. Talk to everyone. You’d be surprised how many reputable people have skeletons in their closets.
When an NPC is removed from your party in BG1, they tend to go to the Friendly Arm Inn if they are from the enhanced edition (Dorn, Neera, Rasaad). Otherwise, they will stay where you left them. In BG2, they tend to go to the Copper Coronet.
When asking for technical support or gameplay advice, please first provide your game difficulty, your party composition, and any mods you may be using.
The game is meant to be enjoyed. Have fun, roleplay, powergame – do whatever it is that you enjoy. Don’t ruin someone else’s experience just because they enjoy the game differently than you do.
