This guide will show you how to beat Ryuzo the boss in two battles. You will learn when each battle happens, what moves Ryuzo has, how to avoid them, and how to win.

Ryuzo Boss Guide

Beating Ryuzo the First Time

You fight Ryuzo during the mission Shadow of the Samurai. This is the last mission in the first area, Izuhara. You will face Ryuzo in the main courtyard of Kaneda Castle.

The fight is close combat only, no ranged weapons. Ryuzo uses standard sword attacks. His red and blue attacks are the most dangerous.

Dodge the red attacks. Ryuzo has a few different red attacks. The hardest one is two attacks after he puts his sword in the sheath for a bit. You need to press Circle a few times to dodge, but not too fast.

You can parry the blue attacks if you have the Unstoppable Sword Parrying skill. If you don’t have it, dodge the blue attacks like the red ones.

The most dangerous blue attack is right after a red attack. Be ready to parry after dodging the red attack.

Hit Ryuzo 2-3 times after dodging or parrying. Unlock perfect parry and press L1 at the last moment. If you lose a lot of health, back away and heal.

You beat Ryuzo but can’t kill him. He runs away and leaves a straw hat item.

Beating Ryuzo the Second Time

You fight Ryuzo again in the quest Out of Darkness. This happens after you sneak into the fortress and poison the Mongols’ milk.

The second fight is the same as the first. It’s actually easier since Ryuzo doesn’t change.

Ryuzo’s attacks:

  • Standard attacks: Easy to block or parry.
  • Red attacks: Dodge or jump back. Can’t be blocked or parried.
  • Blue attacks: Same as red attacks. Can be parried with Unstoppable Sword Parrying skill.

Ryuzo’s combo attacks:

  • Red attack + blue attack
  • Red attack + kick + 1 or 2 blue attacks

Do a bit of damage with 2-3 hits after parrying. Perfect parries and perfect dodges hurt Ryuzo the most.

After winning, a cutscene plays where Jin kills Ryuzo.
