-40°C Settlement Guide
This is a quick guide to survive in a -40°C settlement:
- First, change the survival starting kit by removing nearly all the starting seeds except 2 per kind; save them for next time.
- Insert all 3 spore species in the set and 2 tree seeds.
- Start (try to find a spot with gharlox and deer; it would be super cool to find vyrax too).
- Find a good flat zone to start with, and instantly command to cut as many trees as possible. Meanwhile, make three 3×3 areas with a campfire in the middle, one for a sawmill, and start making planks and coal.
- Start mining and rush to dig for stone to build a water well (while you dig, make an 8×8 square to put an underworld farm for mushrooms).
- Make an entrance for the rooms like a road, but make it internal so the heat won’t drop badly if settlers keep entering and exiting rooms.
- Meanwhile, start a farm and try to harvest “iceroots” around the map. You’ll have to use just that and plant broth for a while.
Repeat this until you run out of space. The entrance room will be used as a ramp entrance for another level of housing and building rooms. Remember to place torches every 4 squares in every internal zone you can.
When you have enough time to build a trap, try to focus on gharlox first; they produce wool. Once you have enough wool, start making basic wear for all your settlers, forcing the uniforms to be wool instead of cloth.
By then, you’ll have a good castle. Start making a serra (greenhouse), study glass, and make sand from stones. Then make 3-level walls and build a serra in it. (If you make it too big, remember to put some torches in the middle of the serra as well, or it becomes too cold.)
When all the walls and the serra are complete, you can start to normalize the settlement’s attitude and make some decent dinners + distillates. (Finally, they deserve some booze after all these troubles!)
That concludes the guide, hope you found it helpful!
