PILGRIM – Guide to Game Mechanics

Light Sources

Always have a light source when you go into a dungeon. Not having one can get you killed. There are two types of lights: torches and lanterns. Torches can be relit from wall torches in dungeons, but they go out after a while. Light every wall torch you see so you can relight your torch later. You have to put the torch away to pick up items.

Lanterns stay lit even when you’re not holding them, but you can’t relight them once they run out. You have to go back to the wagon and use the lantern oil barrel to refill them. Turn them on and off to make them last longer.

Revival Mechanics

The chalk is used to revive dead allies. Bring their body or a mask to the ritual circle outside dungeons or at the Merchant. Draw the magic circle with the chalk and put the body or mask inside when it starts sparking purple. After a few seconds, the dead player should be revived. If you can’t get a body, buy a Mask from the Merchant for £30 and use it instead.

The Engine / Crystal

The Crystal powers the engine, but it runs out. Crystals can be found in dungeons or bought from Merchants for £80. The Merchant also sells a Crystal Compass that points to the crystal in a dungeon. If the crystal runs out and you don’t have a replacement, you and your allies can push the cart manually, but it’s much slower. More people pushing doesn’t make it go faster.

Travel Hazards

A behemoth will follow you while traveling and approach the cart at night (Red Moon). If you’re using crystal energy, you’re safe. If not, stand at the far end of the cart by the steering wheel or outside at the front, or it will try to eat you. It can break the doors at the back of the carriage. There’s a clock near the engine to help you keep track of time.

Locked Gates on the Road

You’ll reach large gates periodically. Someone needs to go through a hole in the wall on the right side to turn the wheel and open it. Close it after you pass, especially if the behemoth is chasing you.

Misc / Observed Mechanics

  • The game follows a loop of Merchant/Dungeon/Merchant/Dungeon.
  • Sometimes you can have an empty village with loot/monsters instead of a dungeon.
  • Running too far from the cart can kill you.
  • If someone drives the cart far enough while you’re in a dungeon, the dungeon will despawn and you can be teleported outside or killed.
  • You can’t pick up bodies cut in half by certain traps.
  • Merchants have a chest in their camp with a £10 loot item next to a trap.
  • Helmets and swords are worth more than Urns, Vases, and Crosses.

I hope you found this useful. Wishing you luck!
