The Hunter: Call of the Wild – Fox Island Guide

The Basics of Fox Island Strategy

By Wonnyy & AlexDeathWolf.

This guide will show you the basics of Fox Island Strategy. This is really comparable to the 4-lake bear method. To start things off with the Fox Island strat, here is what you should do.

My setup is on the left and you can copy this or the one on the right; they both work.

Note: I am not set up on zones; I broke my tents into sections to be able to cover the whole coast. This is why you can copy the placement.

The next step is to find out how many pairs you have on the island. Note that a pair is a female and male sharing a zone. You cannot have a female and female pair or a male and male pair either. Watch out though, because a female solo and a male solo can both share the same drink zone.

The next step is to find out how many solos you have. Note that solos are the foxes that do not travel and share the same drink zone. This may be confusing, but solos can drink in the same spot. When you check the zone indicator, make sure it says 1 to confirm it’s a solo. The next step is to swap your solos for pairs on the right side of the map. You want to do this because solo zones bounce around the map more than pairs do. To do this you:

  • Shoot either the male or female (only one) in the pair on the right side of the map and you can claim it. Then wait a normal time to get a respawn.
  • Shoot your solo on the left side you want to get rid of do not claim it.
  • Shoot whichever male or female that you didn’t shoot before out of the pair and do not claim it.
  • Main menu and wait for some time to respawn.
  • Check your island to see if your number of pairs increased.
  • If not, redo the steps until it does.

This is it for the non-HM grind. If you want to HM, do the following:

Find every pair of foxes not on the left side and shoot the male in the pair if it is higher than level 4. This gets rid of male foxes on the map, strengthening your HM. It is the easiest way to HM but not the most effective. If the male fox is already level 4 or lower, then leave it. If the female is higher than level 5, shoot that and use it the same way.

After this, you want to stack up as many level 9s as you can. Note that you may see inconsistency with your pairs decreasing; this is okay. (I personally got 2 level 9s before I couldn’t get higher.) You want to do this to increase your chance of managing your solo males.

Once you have enough 9s stacked up, go out to every source of water where foxes can be found (here is a map):

Shoot every male level 5 and higher and shoot every female level 6 or higher. Once you manage all the solos down, you have officially finished your HM on red foxes.

Reminder: This map does not have it highlighted, but the very top outpost on the left on the coast above it can have foxes.
