Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord – Performance Guide

Performance Tweaks

How to Change Game Settings:

The settings file is located at:

  • C:\Users\YourPC\AppData\Local\murphy\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

The file is called GameUserSettings.ini. You can open it with Notepad or WordPad. Make a backup of the file first in case you make a mistake.

In the file, you’ll see many graphics settings. The main ones that affect performance are:

[ScalabilityGroups]
sg.ResolutionQuality=100.00000
sg.ViewDistanceQuality=3
sg.AntiAliasingQuality=3
sg.ShadowQuality=3
sg.PostProcessQuality=3
sg.TextureQuality=3
sg.EffectsQuality=3
sg.FoliageQuality=3
sg.ShadingQuality=3

ResolutionQuality changes the game’s resolution. Lower numbers give better performance. The other settings can be set to 0, 1, 2, or 3. Lower numbers also give better performance.

Further down, you’ll find more settings like VSync and frame rate limit. It’s often better to turn VSync off and use frame rate limit instead. You can also change the resolution, but it’s better to use ResolutionQuality to adjust it.

The game has a good borderless windowed mode, so it will fit your screen well. You might need to make the file read-only to keep your changes.

I sincerely hope this was helpful. Good luck to you!
